Sue Higgins, a longtime veteran on Calgary City Council, has passed away.

Councillor Brian Pincott confirmed the news on Monday morning.

He says that Higgins died of cancer and was in hospice care for about three years before her death.

Higgins served on council for about 21 years, beginning in 1977 and was 78 when she died.

Higgins was known for her fiery temper, especially around budget time.

She once stood in council for six hours to question administration over the cost of photo copier toner.

In a debate over whether members of council should be called alderman or councillor, she once told the media she'd rather be called an 'alderbroad' than either.

Her family released a statement on Monday saying:

With profound sadness, the Higgins family confirms the passing of Sue Higgins yesterday evening. The 78 year-old former 7-term Calgary Alderman lost her courageous battle with cancer, and passed away peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Speaking on behalf of the family, daughters Suzy, Lyn and Maureen Higgins reflected that their mom lived a very full life, and in her retirement years she remained active, spending time at home with her grandchildren, tending her garden, playing weekly bridge with friends, and continued to volunteer for the city on the Calgary Awards recognizing contributions by outstanding Calgarians. Sue was always willing to share her knowledge, experience and acumen to those who would ask.

The family sincerely thanks all of the Calgarians who have offered their love and support for Sue during her illness, and the amazing staff at the Intercare Southwood Hospice who provided dedicated and compassionate care for Sue over the past 16 months. At this time, the family is asking for privacy as they grieve and make Sue’s final arrangements. Snodgrass Funeral Homes will be coordinating services on the family’s behalf, with details available later this week.
