A teenage girl, convicted of killing Brett Wiese at a house party in Calgary in 2013, has been sentenced as an adult.

A judge ruled Jazlyn Radke, now 19, will serve a life sentence without any chance of parole for seven years.

Radke was convicted of stabbing Wiese, who was attempting to break up a fight outside a home in the 5100 block of Brisebois Drive N.W. in January 2013.

Police say she was with a group of her friends at the party earlier in the evening but were told to leave because they were not invited.

The group returned a short time later, armed with knives.

Wiese was stabbed seven times in the ensuing fight and died of his injuries in hospital.

A second young man also suffered serious injuries.

Wiese’s family and friends say they still feel his loss every day.

“It is my husband and my daughter, our families, Brett’s friends that have truly been given the life sentence,” says Brett’s mother Brenda. “I can assure you that there isn’t a criminal sentence on Earth that equals the pain and despair that we live every single day.”

Radke was just five months shy of her 18th birthday when the murder took place.

Her identity had been protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act during the proceedings but now, with her adult sentence, that information is no longer protected.

Another man charged in the killing will go on trial later this year.
