A Calgary-based energy corporation is being accused of unfairly driving up energy prices by the Government of Alberta.

The province’s watchdog group has leveled a complaint against Transalta, saying the company shut down operations at some power plants during peak times, thus driving up the rate for electricity.

Transalta is denying the accusations, but Premier Redford has real concern about the complaint.

“We have agencies in place to ensure that when these sorts of circumstances happen, there is the ability to investigate to levy fines, to impose those penalties, and to ensure it doesn’t happen on a regular basis, but I’m very disappointed to know that this is out there.”

Transalta filed a complaint against the Market Surveillance Administrator, the province’s watchdog last week.

It claims it treats them unfairly.

Both of the complaints will be heard by the Alberta Utilities Commission.
