The man accused of killing a local radio legend and his wife in their Braeside home faced a judge for the first time on Monday.
35-year old Derek Puffer is charged with killing his mother Donna Lee and stepfather, sportscaster Bill Powers, last week.
Powers, 71, and Donna Lee, 64, were found dead in their home on 110 Ave S.W. last Thursday after someone called 911 and alerted police at about 5:20 a.m.
An autopsy was conducted and it was determined that the couple died as a result of a stabbing.
Derek Puffer was charged with two counts of second-degree murder on Friday and was in court on Monday to answer to the charges.
Puffer lived in the basement of the Powers’ Braeside home.
On Monday, he was in court and was ordered to undergo a 30-day psychiatric evaluation.
The Puffer family released a statement on Sunday saying:
The Puffer family wishes to thank Calgarians for the outpouring of support and sympathy on the tragic deaths of our beloved Donna Lee and Billy Powers. We very much appreciate the kind words and thoughts expressed about these two wonderful people, who made such an impact on our lives and on the lives of so many others. Your stories and loving memories lift our spirits.
We share the grief of the Powers family and send them our condolences as we mourn this tragedy together.
Our sorrow is combined with concern for our son and brother, Derek. We hope that he will now receive the treatment he needs and we will stand with him as he goes through that painful process.
Thank you to the media for giving us our privacy as we recover from the shock of this week’s events and mourn our loss.
We would also like to express our appreciation to the Calgary Police Service, particularly the Victim Services unit, for their sensitivity and support.
