The Redford government has announced that 22 new schools will be built in the province, with seven of those schools planned for Calgary.
A number of other schools, including one in Calgary, will be renovated and modernized.
All of these schools are scheduled to open by 2016.
The total project will cost about $441M to complete.
The government says in a release that they will provide 13,400 spaces.
“By investing in these school projects today, rather than years from now, we are continuing to build Alberta and meet the needs of our growing province. Our students and parents will benefit from having these advanced learning facilities as the centre of their communities," Wayne Drysdale, Minister of Infrastructure, said in a release.
19 schools in the province will be built through public-private partnerships while the other schools will be built with traditional methods.
The new schools in Calgary are planned for the following areas:
- Saddleridge: New Grade 5 to 9 school, Capacity 900 students
- Northeast: New Grade 10 to 12 high school, Capacity 1,500 students
- Copperfield: New K to Grade 4 school, Capacity 600 students
- New Brighton: New K to Grade 4 school, Capacity 600 students
- Royal Oak/Rocky Ridge: New Grade 5 to 9 school, Capacity 900 students
- Evanston (two schools): New K to Grade 4 school, Capacity 600 students; New K to Grade 9 school, Capacity 900 students
- Auburn Bay: New K to Grade 9 school, Capacity 900 students
The government will also be renovating the Ecole La Mosaique starter school in Martindale.
“As a parent, I know education is one of the best investments we can make for our province and our communities. Having these new schools in place, through this partnership approach, will ensure our kids have the supports they need to learn, succeed and ultimately to keep building Alberta,” said Jeff Johnson, Alberta’s Minister of Education.
A number of other communities will be receiving new schools or renovating older ones:
- Fort McMurray (one new school)
- Beaverlodge (renovation of St. Mary Catholic School)
- Grande Prairie (one new school)
- Joussard (renovation of Joussard School)
- Sexsmith (renovation of Robert W. Zahara School)
- Neerlandia (renovation of Neerlandia School)
- Davisburg (one new school)
- Cochrane (one new school)
- Wheatland (one new school)
- Lethbridge (one new school)
- Blackfalds (one new school)
- Three Hills (modernization of Prairie Christian Academy)
- Edmonton (three new schools)
- St. Albert (two new schools)
- Spruce Grove (one new school)
- Leduc (one new school)
- Fultonvale (modernization of Fultonvale School)
