A group of young Calgarians will get a taste of what it takes to be a police officer under a new program that focuses on policing and engaging youth in a positive way.

The Calgary Police Cadet Corps (CPCC) is designed to give youths between 12 and 18 years-of-age the opportunity to experience the world of policing.

Cenovus Energy is the corporate supporter of the program and Executive Vice-President Kerry Dyte along with CPS Chief Rick Hanson presented the first class of cadets with a ceremonial cadet flag on Sunday.

The CPCC is based on Canadian Military Cadet Programs (Army, Navy, and Air) that have been successfully operating for over 100 years.

Recruits experience and learn about conflict resolution, crime scene investigations, crime prevention, Search and Rescue, self defence, First Aid, Canadian law, firearms (air rifle), physical fitness, effective speaking, and police unit interaction (including Tactical, K-9, and Crime Scenes Units.)

The program is focused on policing but it also helps cadets develop leadership skills, gain experience and enhance their physical fitness.

There are five levels of skill development which are achieved through five consecutive years of involvement with the corps.

Twelve youths were selected to participate in a six-month accelerated program and were introduced to Calgary Police Service ideology and prepared for their roles as leaders for subsequent corps members.

The program hopes to have 90 participants within the next 3 years who will participate in events and celebrations, such as parades, sporting events and charitable work.
