If you are looking forward to some Christmas cheer, then Lougheed House is a good place to check out.
The mansion has been decorated by a team of 12 Calgary designers in ways that compliment the Victorian character of the building.
“Lougheed House was built in 1891 in that late Victorian period,” said Kirstin Evenden, Executive Director of Lougheed House. “That’s really when Christmas as we know it in family settings in houses was really just getting going.”
Lougheed House is busy year-round with dinner theatre and other events, and has even more to offer for the holiday season.
“We are also hosting two special family days, on the 5th and 12fth of December our own Victorian Santa will be here, and you will be able to pull maple taffy in the gardens if you want to get out and do that,” said Evenden. “There’s going to be craft activities, lots of music, our barbershop quartet will be back by popular demand, and on December 3rd and 9th we are having a rendition of A Christmas Carol.”
You can also have a meal at the restaurant or wander the house enjoying the décor. The entire second floor is a museum decorated with Christmas trees. If you are inspired to decorate your home in similar fashion, the designers have a few suggestions.
“Avoid being too structured in what you are doing and don’t be afraid to think outside the box,” said Kevin Gray of Calgary Design Group. “It all comes down to not worrying too much about being perfectly symmetrical with how you put things on a tree, don’t worry too much about being perfectly symmetrical with how you put things on a mantelpiece, just be more loose.”
The house is open now until December 20th to see the decorations. For more information, log on here.
