Even though some of the condos in the Millrise fire were not damaged, the entire building will be torn down.

The blaze broke out on Thursday, just after noon, and consumed the top floor of the four-storey building.

Water and smoke caused so much damage to the rest of the structure that the entire building has been deemed un-habitable.

"There's a lot of water in this building. We have places where there is up to eight inches inside units and the load on the structure is high," says Tom Sampson, from the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

The Canvas at Millrise was a four-storey wood structure. If it was five storeys it would have been made of concrete.

The condo complex was built in 2008 just before the building code changed outlining the need for sprinklers in the attic.

"In the code today, the attic area above the top floor would have to be protected with sprinklers, as well balconies would have to have sprinkler protection," says Kevin Griffiths, the chief building official with the city.

The future of the condo site is now in the hands of the condo board and its insurance company. Together they will decide whether, or not, to rebuild. That decision is expected to be made by Monday.
