A local metal recycling company has been charged with 17 offences in relation to a fire at the facility that burned for several weeks.

The fire broke out at the end of April and sent plumes of smoke into nearby neighbourhoods.

The smoke was so bad that the city enacted the Municipal Emergency Plan and crews were brought in to move the material to another area to finally extinguish the blaze.

Calgary Metal Recycling Inc. & 3415 Ogden Holdings Inc. are charged with:

  • Four counts of failing to ensure storage pile heights conform with the Alberta Fire Code;
  • Four counts of failing to ensure the storage pile sizes conform with the Alberta Fire Code;
  • Seven counts of failing to provide clear space between storage piles and buildings in compliance with the Alberta Fire Code;
  • Two counts of failing to provide an access route for Fire Department vehicles in compliance with the Alberta Fire Code.

It is the first time that Calgary Metal Recycling Inc. and Ogden Holdings Inc. have been charged under the Safety Codes Act.

The charges could get expensive as the maximum penalty for each charge is $15,000.

The first court appearance is set for September 5th, 2012.
