Calgary police are continuing to work out the details after a woman was killed when she was hit and pinned underneath a semi at North Hill Centre.

Shortly before 8:00 p.m., emergency crews were called to the parking lot of the mall, just outside the Safeway store, for reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle.

When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found a woman trapped under the front of a semi.

The woman, in her 30s, was freed and she was taken to hospital in serious, life threatening condition.

The victim later died at Foothills Hospital. She has not been identified.

Police, upon investigating the scene, found that the driver had stopped to let a group of people cross in front of the truck.

At some point, the vehicle began to move and the woman was hit and pinned underneath.

The CPS Traffic Unit says more work needs to be done to figure out exactly what happened.

“We’re looking at her clothing, we’re looking at the lighting, we’re looking at the driver’s attention, if it was on the road ahead or if there was some distraction,” Constable Larry Thibodeau said. “There’s a lot to that investigation and we’re just getting started on that now.”

Thibodeau says they’ll also look at the sightlines from the truck, seeing as though it is a bigger vehicle.

He isn’t sure if the woman was part of the original group that the driver stopped for either.

“We’re still reviewing witness statements, we’re still interviewing people who were in the area and we’re still looking for some video.”

He says the mall itself or the Safeway location could have some video they could use, so they are pursuing that angle as well.

Police, meanwhile, won’t say whether or not any charges will be laid against the driver, who is cooperating with them in their investigation.

They say the truck was stopped just before the crash, so speed and alcohol use are not being considered as factors.
