For the second time during this year’s Calgary Stampede, veterinarians have had to euthanize a horse which was injured during a chuckwagon race.
During Heat Two on Monday night, Shane Nolin’s wagon made contact with B.J. Carey’s lead horse on the third turn.
The incident resulted in one of Carey’s horses being seriously injured.
Upon examining the horse, veterinarians made the decision to evaluate it overnight because it wasn’t initially clear how severe the injury was.
On Tuesday, doctors made the call to euthanize the horse.
Officials with the Chuckwagon Safety Commission have ruled that both drivers were at fault in the incident and will share a $10,000 fine.
That’s the first time the CSC has penalized two drivers since it was established back in 2008.
This is the second horse that’s needed to be put down during this year’s Rangeland Derby.
On Saturday night, one of Layne Bremner’s horses made contact with another wagon and suffered a broken leg.
A veterinarian made the decision to euthanize the horse immediately after the race’s conclusion.
Stampede officials are expected to release more details on Monday night’s incident on Wednesday.
