Sunday’s overcast conditions combined with a nearly week long closure prompted by a drowning death in the lake, resulted in low attendance at a popular recreation area in Fish Creek Provincial Park.
Monica Sippola said Monday’s tragedy didn’t deter her from bringing her family to Sikome Lake on Sunday afternoon.
“I didn’t have any concerns,” said Sippola. “It’s a beautiful place to bring families and enjoy a beautiful day. It’s also a matter of knowing our own (swimming) abilities.”
On Monday afternoon, Sikome Lake was closed after 29-year-old Ali Shaikh fell out of a boat and failed to resurface. Following a two day search involving members of the Calgary Fire Department dive team and the HAWCS helicopter, Shaikh’s body was located and recovered.
Officials will continue to monitor the lake’s water quality to ensure the water in the man-made lake is on par with the standards for naturally occurring beaches. The water will be tested six times each week.
