Suncor Energy announced on Wednesday that they would be donating $1.5M to the flood relief effort through a comprehensive program that will allow employees and customers to donate to the victims.
The company says the funding with be administered through the Suncor Energy Foundation (SEF).
"While it is devastating to see the damage as a result of the unprecedented flooding, it is heartwarming to see the community rally together," said Steve Williams Suncor president and chief executive officer in a release on Wednesday. "Many of our employees have been volunteering to help with the clean-up efforts and as a company, we will help. That's why we've developed a comprehensive flood-relief program that will deliver dollars to organizations that have expertise in getting funds to those who need it the most."
The program will provide support in four ways:
- immediate response
- re-entry programs
- recovery activity
- rebuilding efforts
The first donation from Suncor came on June 21 with a $150,000 donation to the Canadian Red Cross.
Through their Humanitarian Relief Program, Suncor employees are also able to donate to the effort and those donations will be matched by the SEF.
Suncor also says they will be making donations to the United Way of Calgary and Area’s emergency fund to aid in the re-entry of people into homes heavily impacted by flooding.
The company will also be supporting the First Nations directly affected by the flooding by providing financial and fuel assistance to support Bridges Social Development.
In addition, Suncor will be working in partnership with the Calgary Foundation and the CBC, committing $100,000 to establish the Flood Recovery and Rebuilding Fund with another $150,000 being allocated to match individual donations.
Petro-Canada has also provided $25,000 worth of fuel for relief efforts and Petro-Points members will also be able to donate their points in increments of 1,000 to the Red Cross. The company will be matching those points dollar for dollar.
The Government of Alberta announced on Monday that they would be donating $1.5B to the flood relief efforts that will be divided amongst the affected areas.
