Emergency crews were called to a fatal crash in central Alberta that killed three people and sent two others to hospital.

The crash happened on Highway 12 near Range Road 43, east of Rocky Mountain House, at about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Clearwater Fire officials say two vehicles were involved and that the roads were icy and snow packed at the time of the crash.

“Well it was slippery in the area so that may have been a cause to the accident,” said Paul Prevost, Deputy Chief Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Service.

RCMP say early indications suggest that a westbound truck with two people in it lost control and crossed into the path of an eastbound pickup truck carrying three people.

The two people in the westbound truck were pronounced dead at the scene along with the driver of the eastbound truck.

Two passengers in the eastbound truck were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

STARS crews from Calgary and Edmonton were dispatched to the area but were called off because they were no longer required.

“Upon initial call out and actually in second information we got, the people were still alive, but when EMS got there they discovered that the people were deceased so then STARS will not fly, obviously don’t need them if there is nothing they can do so they had launched and we were going to set up landing zones, then we didn’t do that in the end,” said Prevost.

Police say alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The ages and identity of the deceased are not being released pending notification of next of kin.
