Calgary police have charged one man and are looking for a second suspect in connection to the death of Gatleak Metkurjock two years ago.

Emergency crews were called to the 2100 block of 16 Street S.W. at about 2:30 a.m. on January 25, 2012 after a witness called 911 and reported a man in distress in the street.

Gatleak Thor Metkurjock was found on the ground in front of a residence and was taken to hospital in serious life threatening condition.

Police later determined that he had been at a party and was hit in the head with a frying pan during an altercation.

He died from his injuries in hospital the next day from blunt force trauma.

Police arrested a man without incident on Tuesday and say he was always a person of interest in the case.

The man was escorted into arrest processing on Tuesday evening and charged with second-degree murder on Wednesday.

Police say that the accused was under 18 at the time of the incident, and will not be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

On Wednesday, police issued a warrant for the arrest of Anthony Ambrose Brothers, 21, of Calgary, for one count of second-degree murder.

He is described as:

  • Aboriginal
  • 175 cm or 5’ 9” tall
  • About 86 Kg or 190 lbs
  • Brown eyes
  • Black Hair

Daniel Buom Metkurjock is the victim’s uncle and says the family is relieved at the news that an arrest has been made.

“I’m really very happy. We, the family of Gatleak, we’re really very happy when we heard the news that those who murdered Gatleak, has been caught by the Calgary Police Service and then they will be brought to justice,” said Daniel.

Daniel says Gatleak was working on his English and dreamed of becoming an engineer.

He says he will be in court to face the people who murdered his nephew.

“I’ll go down there to hear the court hearing because we are very pleased to know why they committed this act and why do they murder Gatleak,” said Daniel.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Anthony Brothers is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
