Air Canada says all short-haul and medium-haul flights to, and from, Vancouver have been cancelled.

The advisory was issued on Wednesday because of a severe winter storm on the West Coast.

That advisory means many who turned up at the Calgary International Airport on Wednesday simply had to turn around and go back home.

For those who waited around, well, it was a long wait. "I was supposed to be on a flight this morning, that one got cancelled then this one just got cancelled so now we're back on line again to try one more time to see what we're going to do," says one passenger.

For those stuck in line waiting for flights, WestJet offered a little relief with some free pizza.

For customers with tickets on cancelled flights, Air Canada says they need to reconfirm a new booking on a future flight before heading back to the airport.

Air Canada says Albertans should be aware that eastbound flights to the eastern part of the country, the United States and Europe should operate as normal from the Calgary and Edmonton airports.

Anyone who is planning to fly in the coming days should check the status of their flight as airlines and airports try to catch up on the backlog.

The Calgary airport has scaled down its website to allow people better access to arrival and departure times. To check on flights into, and out of, Calgary International Airport, click on the link to the right.
