A Calgary woman accused of killing her daughter took the stand in her own defence on Friday morning.

Aset Magomadova is charged with second degree murder in the strangulation of her 14-year-old daughter in February 2007.

Magomadova was arrested soon after the body of her daughter, Aminat Magomadova, was found dead in the family's home in the city's southeast.

Emergency crews discovered Aminat's body after they responded to a 911 call from the residence.

Aset Magomadova was charged with second degree murder and released on bail about a week after the murder.

Aset has maintained that she acted in self defence and on Friday she took the stand in her own defence.

The 39-year-old mother of two outlined a very difficult and tumultuous relationship between herself and her daughter.

Through an interpreter, Magamadova said that her daughter's behavior changed about one year after the family moved to Calgary from Chechnya.

Aset told the court that Aminat threatened a junior high school student and assaulted a teacher.

While on the stand, Magamadova became very emotional as she detailed the night her daughter died.

 She became so distraught that she collapsed on the stand and EMS/> was called in to attend to her.

Medical assistance was not required and she was able to continue her testimony.

 She told the court that she was afraid of her daughter and that she acted in self defence when Aminat attacked her with 2 knives. 

The crown is expected to cross examine Aset Magamadova Friday afternoon.
