Despite an increased presence on Alberta's highways, the Integrated Traffic Unit says there was still a significant amount of tragedies on provincial highways over the long weekend.
The news comes from a release from the organization, which states there were just over 5,000 violations and non-violations handed out.
Probably about the most sobering fact was that eight people lost their lives in seven traffic incidents.
Officials also record 48 incidents involving impaired driving on Alberta's roads.
There were also several drivers driving at speeds well in excess of the posted speed limit, including a set of motorcycles recorded near Crossfield at 180 km/h and a young, unlicenced, driver clocked at 187 km/h near the same exit on Highway 2.
A total of 67 drivers were charged with driving at speeds in excess of 50 km/h about the speed limit on Alberta roads.
Superintendent Howard Eaton says that the long weekend is just the start of the summer highway safety campaign. It will be followed by heightened services during the summer, monthly traffic safety calendar campaigns, and enhanced Alberta Checkstop campaigns.
