The Calgary Police Hate Crimes Unit is investigating after a window was smashed, a Qu’ran was burned and hateful messages were left at the Calgary Islamic Centre South.

Investigators say it happened sometime between last Thursday night and early Friday morning.

It’s the third anti-Muslim incident in the city in a week. Last Tuesday, 40 anti-Muslim posters were found posted around campus at the University of Calgary. The posters told members of the Muslim community to leave Canada.

Similar posters also ended up in mailboxes in the community of Hillhurst-Sunnyside.

Islamic Centre representatives say despite the hateful acts, they just hope to speak to the person responsible.

"We just want him to have the courage to come forward, if the law permits, we don't want to press anything against him, we just want to have a dialogue so we can create a common understanding and make him understand that what he did is not the Canadian way," said Junaid Mahoon, Calgary Islamic Centre South.

Police say the poster incident did not meet the threshold for hate crimes, but the vandalism does.

Investigators want to speak with anyone who may have seen anything suspicious that night.
