Alberta RCMP and Sheriffs are cracking down on speeders and aggressive drivers on the QEII Highway and arrested a 17-year-old driver who was going over 200km/hr on Wednesday morning.
Officers were out early on Wednesday and Thursday conducting enhanced traffic enforcement operations along the Highway 2 corridor between Red Deer and Lacombe.
Police handed out a total of 65 tickets during the two day operation, mostly for speeding.
Two drivers in particular caught their attention for travelling at speeds well in excess of the posted limit.
A 17-year old from Lacombe, was arrested after he was caught doing 204 km/hr in his father’s 1997 BMW at about 6:21 a.m. Wednesday.
The youth was charged with Dangerous Driving and is expected to appear in Ponoka Provincial Court on August 14, 2013.
Police also stopped a vehicle being driven by a 53-year-old woman from Beaumont that was travelling at 163 km/hr at about 9:51 a.m. on Thursday.
She was issued a summons for speeding and will appear in court on August 8, 2013.
The operation was launched in response to a number of complaints from the public regarding dangerous drivers during the morning commute.
