The trial for a man accused of ambushing a peace officer on a rural property in 2012 got underway in a Calgary courtroom on Monday.

MD of Foothills Peace Officer, Rod Lazenby, responded to a dog complaint on a Priddis property on August 10, 2012 and according to court documents was overpowered and restrained by 49-year-old Trevor Kloschinsky.

Lazenby, a retired RCMP officer, was then dropped off in his own SUV at the Calgary Police District 8 Office in medical distress and was pronounced dead at hospital.

Kloschinsky was arrested the next day and charged with first-degree murder.

On Monday, court heard Kloschinsky's first videotaped interview.

In an agreed statement of facts, read at Kloschinksy's trial, he admitted that he caused the death of Officer Lazenby and told police that he caught “him stealing my dogs,” and that he had to “take things into his own hands.”

Kloschinsky's lawyer says he is not criminally responsible in Lazenby's death.
