A woman charged with manslaughter and failing to provide the necessities of life in connection with the death of a toddler in Medicine Hat last week has been granted bail.

24-year-old, Erin Jackman, made a brief appearance in a Medicine Hat court on Tuesday morning and was released on bail with conditions.

Jackman is the operator of the day home where police say the 19-month-old child was assaulted.

The child was airlifted to Calgary with critical head injuries on July 19 and died in Alberta Children's Hospital two days later.

The court imposed several conditions on Jackman including:

  • No contact with anyone under the age of 12
  • Supervised visits with her own children who are in their father's custody
  • No contact with the victim's family

Jackman will be back in court to answer to the charges on September 14, 2010.

The family of the child has set up a trust fund to help cover the costs of the burial.

Anyone wishing to help can donate to an account under her mother's name Sarah Hemstra at any TD Canada Trust branch.
