Fire crews are monitoring hot spots at a home in northeast Calgary after they say lightning struck and set it alight on Tuesday night.

At around 8 p.m., residents inside a home on Martin Brook Road N.E. called 911, saying that lightning had hit their home.

Officials say a mother and her seven-year-old son were at home when they heard a loud bang and started to smell smoke.

Both residents, who were not injured, left the home.

When fire crews got there, they found the home on fire.

They managed to knock it down but not without the home suffering extensive damage.

Officials say instances of lightning strikes involving homes seems to be happening more and more frequently. "It happens quite often, especially in the last few years," says CFD District Chief Tom Guterson. "We seem to be getting different weather patterns or more aggressive weather patterns, so it does happen often."

There is no estimate, but fire crews say it will be some time before the family can return home.
